Yankees through Aug 9: August opens 4-4 as elite pitching gets wasted; Judge's return still open-ended

The 2026 Yankees are the same split team they were in July — baseball's best-pitched club attached to a lineup that cannot score without Aaron Judge — and the first nine days of August have only sharpened the picture. New York went 4-4 from Aug 1-9, including a 3-3 week against St. Louis and Atlanta, to sit at 66-52, 5.5 games behind first-place Tampa Bay and just 1.5 games ahead of a Boston club that is 32-7 since June 25 12. The rotation delivered three of its best starts of the season in four days and won only two of them; Judge remains cleared for nothing beyond light activity, with no return date set 189.

What changed since the July report: the Yankees played their first two August series (lost two of three to the Cardinals, won two of three from the Braves), promoted 21-year-old shortstop George Lombard Jr. (demoting Anthony Volpe), signed catcher Mitch Garver to a minor-league deal, got Carlos Rodón through his first rehab start, and watched their cushion over the Red Sox shrink to a half-game over the weekend before Boston's Monday loss in Toronto restored it to 1.5 171013.

The week in review: Aug 3-9

The week split into a dispiriting Cardinals series bookended by trade-deadline arrivals and a Braves series that showcased the staff at its best and the offense at its most maddening 2:

The 13-7 loss on Aug 3 was the outlier in every sense: the Cardinals' 13 runs were more than half of the 24 runs the Yankees allowed all week, and the 7 runs the offense scored were its most since before the All-Star break — MLB.com noted it was just the fourth time in 41 games New York scored more than five 8. The rest of the week was the season in miniature: five of the other six games were decided by one or two runs, with the Yankees going 3-2 in them 2. The Aug 7 comeback win improved New York's extra-inning record to 2-8, and Sunday's 10-inning loss made it 2-9 62.

Run scoring and pitching trends

August's numbers through nine games continue the July slide — the offense is below 3 runs a game on the month, the pitching is still elite 1:

• Run scoring: New York has averaged 3.8 runs per game in the 59 games since Judge last played (May 31), versus 5.2 per game in the 59 with him, and is 30-29 without him 1. In the Aug 3-9 week specifically the offense scored 19 runs in 6 games (3.17 R/G) — and only 12 in the other seven August games outside the 13-7 blowout 2. Ben Rice's ninth-inning tying single on Aug 7 snapped an 0-for-17 start to August for the club 6.
• Run prevention: The staff's 3.26 ERA since June 25 is second-best in the majors, and its 3.30 season ERA remains MLB's best 1. August's nine games produced a 3.33 RA/G with a 10.00 K/9, buoyed by Fried (6.1 scoreless, 7 K), Cole (7 IP, 2 R, 9 K) and Schlittler (7 IP, 1 R, 11 K, 0 BB) in successive starts 645.
• The cost of the drought: of the 30 runs the Yankees have allowed in August, 17 came in the seven non-blowout games — and the team has lost three of the five one-to-two-run games in the month 2.

The offense without Judge

The deadline acquisitions were meant to fix this and so far have not. Through the Braves series, Luis García Jr. is 4-for-19 (.211) with one home run in six Yankees games and Heliot Ramos is 2-for-17 (.118) in five 1. The real jolt has come from within: George Lombard Jr. — the MLB.com No. 20 prospect whose name was the sticking point in the failed Skubal talks — was promoted Aug 4, homered in his debut, and is 5-for-17 (.294) with 2 HR and a 1.346 OPS through five games while taking over at shortstop, with Anthony Volpe sent to Triple-A 714. Outfielder Spencer Jones, 25, is getting everyday at-bats because of the outfield injuries and went 2-for-2 against Chris Sale on Aug 8 with an RBI single and an RBI triple 4.

The supporting cast remains thin around Ben Rice — who has carried the lineup all year (.257/.350/.545, team-high 32 HR, 147 OPS+ in 113 games through the All-Star break) — with Austin Wells (.175/.273/.299) and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (.216/.295/.396) still mired in brutal seasons. Chisholm called his contract-year struggles "super frustrating" on Aug 10 1. The Yankees, unable to land a catcher at the deadline after Rutschman went to Boston, signed Mitch Garver to a minor-league deal on Aug 7 (Triple-A, with an opt-out later this month) 13. Since June 1 the club ranks 26th in runs per game (3.96), 30th in batting average (.221), 30th in OBP (.283) and 27th in OPS (.672) 8.

Pitching staff leaders

• Cam Schlittler remains the staff anchor at 10-6, 2.21 ERA in 25 starts (146.2 IP) after Sunday's no-decision gem; the four runs he allowed on Aug 3 were his worst start of the month 5.
• Gerrit Cole improved to 6-5 (3.35 ERA in 14 starts) on Aug 8, striking out nine over seven innings and recording his 1,000th strikeout as a Yankee — the 13th player in franchise history — while allowing one run in 18.2 IP (0.48 ERA) with 21 K over his last three starts 4.
• Max Fried (4-3, 2.88) threw 6.1 scoreless against his former club on Aug 7; Ryan Weathers (5-7) and Will Warren (8-6) took the week's other decisions 2.
• Closer David Bednar has 26 saves (he took the Aug 7 win in extras); Brent Headrick (1.52 ERA) and swingman Paul Blackburn (1.95) front the setup group, though Blackburn took Sunday's 10th-inning loss 2.

Injuries

Judge's status has moved, but only sideways. Cashman said on Aug 3 he "can't rule out" the captain missing the rest of the season while insisting the organization remains "very optimistic" — a round of imaging is still pending with no date set 8. Judge was then cleared for light activity — on-field running and upper-body resistance work — in the week of Aug 3, and said he'll be back this season 1.

• Aaron Judge — right rib stress fracture, last played May 31, on the 60-day IL. Return timeline: undetermined as of Aug 10; Rosenthal's best case is late August/early September 91.
• Giancarlo Stanton — right calf strain, out since April; jogged in the outfield and "started the introduction to some bases" in early August; Boone: "I expect him back here at some point" 11.
• Cody Bellinger — hamstring strain, working out on the field; still no timeline, not expected before September 1.
• Carlos Rodón — left elbow inflammation, IL since June 30; first rehab start Aug 8 (2.2 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 HR, ~48 pitches) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre: "The goal was just to get out there and get 48 pitches… happy with how I feel." Another rehab outing is expected 10.
• Clarke Schmidt — Tommy John (July 2025); had forearm cramping after live BP last week, but is playing catch again and could resume throwing within days 12.

Standings and outlook

As of Monday Aug 10: Rays 71-46 lead the AL East and had won six straight (sweeping Seattle, the Yankees' next opponent) for an 8-2 last-10 mark; the Yankees (66-52) hold the No. 1 AL wild card, 1.5 games ahead of Boston (64-53), whose 32-7 run since June 25 — a 2.90 ERA over that span, with separate 15- and 9-game winning streaks — briefly cut the gap to a half-game over the weekend 1. Texas (59-59) holds the third wild card, 7.0 games back of New York. FanGraphs gives the Yankees a 98.9% playoff chance but only 17.3% to win the division (Rays 74.7%, Red Sox 7.9%) 1.

The Yankees have 44 games left with MLB's sixth-easiest remaining schedule (.488 opponent winning percentage), including four games apiece against Boston and Tampa Bay, all at Yankee Stadium 1. That late-September Rays series and the Aug 28-30 Red Sox four-gamer remain the pivot points of the season.

Week ahead: Aug 11-17

The Mariners arrive at 56-63 and were just swept by the Rays 12. After that come six straight AL East games (Toronto ×3, Baltimore ×3) before the home stretch of August — Blue Jays (Aug 21-23), Astros (Aug 25-27) and the four-game Red Sox series (Aug 28-30, with a day-night doubleheader Aug 29) 2. The Yankees were the only one of the three AL East contenders off on Monday, while Boston opened a four-game set in Toronto and the Rays began three in Oakland — an early opportunity to bank ground 1.

Bottom line

The August story so far is the July story, unchanged: a first-place-caliber pitching staff — 3.30 ERA, best in MLB, with Cole, Fried and Schlittler all in form — attached to an offense averaging 3.8 runs per game without Judge and 30-29 in those games. The deadline bats (García, Ramos) have not hit, so the club is leaning on 21-year-old Lombard and 25-year-old Jones for life; Garver is depth, not a fix. The Rays keep pulling away and Boston is the closest threat, so the practical question is whether Judge (late August/early September at best) and Stanton get back before the Red Sox four-gamer — because with this rotation, one impact bat is probably all that separates a wild-card team from a division winner.
